Hello! My name is Marianne Chua. I am a grade 11 student currently attending St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School. Attending the National High School Leadership Conference has been extremely beneficial, as I have learned a lot from the workshops and different speakers throughout the conference. Here is my blog that strives to highlight my new knowledge on management and finance.
“I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” -Estee Lauder.
During the morning activity of the Goodman School of Business Presentation, I learned of the possible opportunities for good, business university programs. I learned about the options for abroad semesters, Internships, Co-ops, Double Degrees and minors. There are many amazing opportunities for business that Brock University offers.
My first workshop was the CPA Ontario Pitch Workshop. Alina Huang shared her amazing story about her failures and path to success in getting a job at Deloitte. It was incredibly inspirational, as she described how even in the worse situations, it doesn’t define who you are. Only you can define where you want to go. You have the ability to turn that problem into a great opportunity. Make opportunities, find opportunities, and take advantage of them
My second workshop was the Concentra Leadership Workshop, in which I learned a lot about finance and investing. I learned that $1 now is worth more than $1 in the future, and that you should take advantage and harness the power of compound interest when investing. I learned about the time value of money and compounding, risk return trade off, stocks, and was given advice on investing in the future.
I see myself as an entrepreneur because I love having that control and drive in making money, while doing something that I love to do. I love to strategically solve problems to create a bountiful end result. I’ve learned that you can make $5 grow into so much more by starting early. I’d want to start a business of baking and selling baked goods - something for everybody to enjoy.
