Being a leader is one thing but knowing how to be a great leader is another thing and is very rare.

By Deborah Babatunde . July 23, 2024

Illuminate Universe and CPA Ontario’s Women in Leadership work-integrated learning experience stands out for its robust and multifaceted approach to empowering women in leadership roles within any industry. As a Community Leader at Illuminate Universe, this reflection highlights my reviews and learnings from my learning journey. One of the learning experience’s primary strengths is its focus on providing practical skills and strategies tailored to the unique challenges faced by women in leadership positions. The learning experience effectively balances theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, which equips participants with tools they can directly apply to their own careers.

The learning experience excels in creating an inclusive learning environment that fosters open discussions where you can share your thoughts and ask any questions. By incorporating diverse experiences, it enriches the educational experience and ensures that the content is relevant to a wide audience of women.

Illuminate Universe’s involvement in this learning experience has been instrumental in elevating the educational experience. Their innovative approach to integrating technology and interactive learning platforms has significantly enhanced engagement. Through virtual networking opportunities and digital workshops, Illuminate Universe has made it possible for participants to connect with peers and mentors across various locations, broadening their learning scope and support network.

Key Takeaways

Leadership Styles and Personal Authenticity

One of my key takeaways was the importance of understanding and embracing one’s leadership style. The learning experience highlighted that effective leadership is not about conforming to a singular mold but about leveraging one’s unique strengths and values. This insight was reinforced as I continued to work through the learning experience and also as I made some of my own personal reflections on my learning and leadership journey, emphasizing the need for authenticity in leadership roles.

Strategic Networking and Mentorship

Another critical lesson was the value of strategic networking and the role of mentorship in career advancement. The learning experience demonstrated how building and maintaining meaningful professional relationships can open doors and provide support. The sessions on networking strategies and mentorship dynamics were particularly enlightening, illustrating how these elements contribute to long-term success.

Effective Communication

The learning experience placed significant communication. Communication is a cornerstone of effective leadership, and for women in leadership roles, it often takes on more meaning. Clear, assertive communication helps in articulating vision, setting expectations, and fostering an inclusive environment where team members feel valued and heard. Women leaders, in particular, may navigate unique challenges in balancing assertiveness with empathy, striving to establish authority while remaining approachable. Effective communication also involves active listening, which enables leaders to understand and address the diverse perspectives and needs of their teams. By mastering both verbal and non-verbal communication, women in leadership can build trust, resolve conflicts, and inspire their teams, ultimately driving organizational success and fostering a collaborative workplace culture. From going through the learning experience, I was able to learn how to navigate challenges, manage stress, and adapt to changing environments.

Encouragement of Positivity, Resilience, and Personal Growth

The learning experience fosters a positive learning environment by celebrating successes and learning from setbacks. It encourages participants to adopt a growth mindset, viewing challenges as opportunities for development rather than obstacles. For example, there was a whole segment  on overcoming imposter syndrome and building self-confidence to help participants develop resilience and a more positive outlook on their professional journeys. Illuminate Universe plays a key role in highlighting messages of empowerment and growth. Their interactive modules and virtual forums create spaces for participants to share their experiences and receive constructive feedback. This communal approach not only reinforces the learning experience’s key messages but also helps build a supportive network among participants.

Personal Learning and Leadership Style

Personally, this reflection process and leadership journey have been transformative. I have gained a deeper understanding of my leadership style, recognizing the value of adaptability and emotional intelligence in guiding teams. As a youth leader and media coordinator, I have learned the importance of leading with empathy and inclusivity, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are valued and collaboration is encouraged.
