One of the most impactful ways to develop career leadership is through professional engagement. A key strategy is cold outreach to professionals in your field. This can be as simple as sending a well-crafted email or LinkedIn message to arrange a coffee chat. These conversations offer invaluable insights into industry trends, career strategies, and personal experiences that textbooks can't provide.


During a workshop with Deloitte, a professional shared a piece of advice that truly resonated with me: “Don’t be afraid of being awkward or even cringe when socializing. It’s totally okay.” This insight was both refreshing and empowering. He emphasized that feeling awkward is often part of the networking process and shouldn’t hold you back from reaching out. His own experience—receiving an offer at Deloitte through a referral—highlighted the power of embracing discomfort to build meaningful connections.


My Takeaway

Before attending this workshop, I understood that communication was important in career development, but I didn't fully grasp the intricacies of networking. The experience was eye-opening, revealing that networking goes beyond exchanging business cards or adding connections on LinkedIn. It’s about being genuine, even if that means being a little awkward, and building relationships that can provide long-term career support.

For me, career leadership is closely tied to exploration and self-discovery. As a university student, balancing academics with career exploration has been crucial. Attending workshops like the one at Deloitte has helped me identify my strengths and interests. The workshop deepened my understanding of how essential networking is—not only for opening career opportunities but also for connecting with like-minded individuals who can offer guidance and inspiration.

  1. Start with a Purpose:Before reaching out to professionals, have a clear goal in mind. Whether you want to learn about industry trends, get advice on career paths, or seek mentorship, knowing your purpose will help you craft a more compelling message.

  3. Embrace the Awkwardness:It’s normal to feel awkward when initiating a conversation with someone you don’t know well. Remember that professionals have been in your shoes before. Embracing this discomfort can lead to meaningful connections and valuable insights.
