As a Community Leader at Illuminate Universe, I had the opportunity to dive deep into the transformative world of social innovation. Through a unique work-integrated learning experience, I explored how technology and creativity can converge to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. Here are my reviews on my learning reflections and key takeaways of this work-integrated learning experience, as well as insights on my leadership journey.
PURPOSE
Embarking on this course was not just an academic exercise—it was a profound personal journey. I began with a broad understanding of social innovation but quickly realized that the true essence of innovation lies in empathy and leadership. The most impactful lesson I learned was the importance of deeply understanding the needs of those we aim to serve. The course challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and engage directly with communities, listening to their stories, struggles, and aspirations.
One of the most eye-opening moments was when I learned about the Hedgehog Model. This concept encouraged me to reflect on my passions, skills, and economic drivers. The Hedgehog Model can be identified by performing the following 3 evaluations:
Identifying your passions about the workspace;
Figuring out where the company does well at producing income(skills);
Understanding your economic engine, and how profitable it is.
I discovered that my true passion lies in education and empowering others through knowledge. By aligning this with my strengths in communication and leadership, I found my "sweet spot" — a guiding light that now directs my efforts in social innovation.
STEPS TO SOCIAL INNOVATION
Social innovation is more than just a process—it is a journey that requires deep understanding, creativity, and perseverance. While generating ideas and creating prototypes can be challenging, understanding the key steps of the process is crucial for creating sustainable and impactful solutions:
Identify the problem: the first step in any social innovation is to gain clarity on the problem you want to solve. I learned that this step requires not just identifying an issue, but truly understanding its scope—whether it’s local or global—and its significance to the communities involved. In my experience, this meant digging deep into the context of the problem, asking tough questions, and challenging my initial assumptions.
Empathize: empathy is at the heart of social innovation. To truly grasp the problem, immerse yourself in the experiences of those directly affected. Conduct surveys, interviews, and community engagements to gather insights. This step is about deeply listening and connecting with people on an emotional level.
Define: with the problem and feedback in hand, it was time to define the core challenges. This step is about more than just summarizing findings; it’s about identifying patterns, considering broader conditions, and laying the groundwork for an effective solution.
Ideate: brainstorming solutions was where creativity came into play. While you may have initial ideas, remain open to new approaches. Sometimes, the best ideas come from unexpected places or through collaboration with others.
Prototype: create a prototype to test your concept. This phase is about applying design thinking to develop a tangible representation of your solution.
Test and assess: present the prototype to the community members you previously engaged with. Gather honest feedback through demonstrations or trials. Some key questions to consider about the model that may be helpful for considering its functionality: Does it function as intended? Does it meet the community’s needs? Is it reliable and adaptable? The feedback loop is crucial in refining the prototype.
Consider sustainability: evaluate the long-term sustainability of the solution. Think about whether it can evolve over time and continue to benefit the community.
By understanding and applying these steps, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity and potential of social innovation. Each step is a vital part of the journey, guiding you from problem identification to creating sustainable, impactful solutions.
MY EXPERIENCE AND TAKEAWAYS
In this course, I learned that being a social innovator is not simply about generating ideas; it's about being a leader who listens, empathizes, and acts with purpose. For example, when we were asked to identify the root causes of a problem, it became clear that understanding the broader context and the lived experiences of affected individuals was crucial. This insight has transformed the way I approach problem-solving in my life.
This learning experience of the “The power of Social innovation” has been a crucial part in my understanding of leadership, especially in the context of innovating to communities and projects. I have come to realize that leadership in this field is not just about having a vision or strategy—it is about fostering a deep commitment to empathy, continuous learning, and a genuine desire to create positive change.
Throughout the learning experience, I immersed myself in the concepts and principles of social innovation. I deepened my understanding of what it means to be a leader in this space. I learned that true leadership involves not only guiding others but also being open to new ideas, perspectives, and ways of thinking. I have gained valuable insights into enhancing my communication skills and expressing myself more effectively. I have also learned the importance of merging these abilities with my passions and talents. Additionally, it has encouraged me to take the initiative as a leader, confidently sharing ideas about social innovations with others.
One of my favorite parts of the learning experience was the emphasis on empathy. The idea of deeply immersing oneself in the experiences of those affected by a problem resonated with me. It taught me that walking in someone else’s shoes isn’t just a phrase—it’s an essential mindset for creating meaningful solutions.
Brainstorming solutions during the ideation phase was another highlight. I found that this step allowed me to embrace creativity, and I learned to remain flexible. I used to believe that sticking to a plan was the best approach, but this experience taught me the importance of being adaptable. The collaboration with peers opened my eyes to the value of diverse perspectives in sparking innovation.
Although I did not participate directly in building a prototype, I had the opportunity to apply similar principles when working on a software development project with a team. We created a website that allowed teachers to create and use quizzes, designed to enhance their teaching process. This project reinforced the value of collaborative problem-solving—just as in social innovation, we needed to empathize with the end users (the teachers), brainstorm creative solutions, and work together to turn our ideas into a functional platform. The experience of balancing different perspectives and skills within the team gave me valuable insights into the dynamics of teamwork and the importance of clear communication. Throughout the hard work and our efforts, together with a team we have faced several challenges - most of them were related to the implementation of complex databases. However, by collaborating and communicating with each other, we have overcome these challenges and were able to create our functional prototype.
In addition, I learned the importance of gathering feedback from clients. During the software development project, our team communicated regularly with the client, ensuring that we were on the right track. By listening to their advice and incorporating their feedback, we were able to refine our ideas and create a solution that truly met their needs. This experience taught me that feedback is not just a step in the process—it is a continuous dialogue that shapes and improves the final product.
The concept of sustainability made me reflect on my long-term approach to innovation. It pushed me to think about how solutions can evolve and adapt over time, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful. Through this course and my past experiences, I have developed a greater appreciation for the social innovation process. It consolidated my belief in the importance of empathy as a leader and challenged me to be more creative, adaptable, and resilient in my approach to problem-solving.
REFLECTIONS ON MY LEADERSHIP JOURNEY
Throughout this learning experience, I have realized that my leadership journey is deeply connected to empathy and collaboration. During the software development project, where my team and I built a quiz platform for teachers, I discovered how essential communication and teamwork are. Collaborating with my colleagues and the client was not just about getting the job done; it was about fostering an environment where everyone’s ideas were valued and integrated into the solution. This experience solidified my belief that my leadership style thrives on collaboration and openness, which aligns closely with the principles of social innovation.

By regularly communicating with our client and incorporating their feedback, we were able to refine our solution into something that truly met their needs. As I reflect on my journey through the social innovation course, I realize that the lessons I have learned are not just about creating solutions—they are about becoming a more thoughtful and effective leader. The ability to stay focused, adapt, and persevere in the face of adversity will ultimately lead you to success.

Never view feedback as criticism—it is a vital tool for growth and improvement.
